The Right Way to Ask Clarification Questions in English
There's a fear that asking a clarifying question exposes you as not having listened, or not being senior enough to already know. The phrasing is usually the problem, not the question itself.
"Can you say more about the timeline you mentioned?" is specific, engaged, and keeps the ball in the other person's court — versus a vague "what do you mean," which can read as lost.
Precision in the question is what makes it sound like leadership instead of confusion. Here are a few examples:
Can you say more about the presentation outline?
When you say we need this finalized by "Friday", do you mean it needs to go out to the client, or just be ready for internal review?
Just to make sure I'm building on the right version- could you walk me through that last point again?
The goal isn’t to avoid questions in English — it’s to ask them in a way that demonstrates clarity and confidence. When you choose language that shows you’re actively listening and aligning, your questions become a strength, not a liability. Precision creates connection, and connection creates better results.
